Living Water

Today’s Reading: John 4:5-15

John 7:37-38 — “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”

God promises ongoing renewal. John makes clear that Jesus was speaking about the Holy Spirit who would come to live inside all who would believe in Jesus. The Holy Spirit would be a bubbling source of eternal life inside the believer.

In a land where water is a scarce and precious commodity, an unending source of water would be a great blessing. The Samaritan woman desired the resource Jesus described because she wanted to not have to go draw water from Jacob’s well every day.

But Jesus was not trying to sell this woman a convenient labor-saving device. Jesus was offering God’s eternal life for free! Instead of having to go to a temple or a synagogue to worship God and make offerings for forgiveness of sins, she could become the temple of the Holy Spirit and receive eternal forgiveness.

Jesus was making known to the Samaritan woman and the people at the Jewish festival God’s new way of life for them. If they would only believe in Jesus and His sacrifice for their sins, they could have an ongoing source of transformational, eternal life welling up within them in the Person of the Holy Spirit.

When the enemy surrounds you and lays siege to your soul, you have a source of living water to sustain you. In the spiritually arid desert of this world system, you have a holy well to draw from. The Holy Spirit is the spring of sweet refreshment that Jesus has given to us as He promised. Draw on His life and drink from the depths of His love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, kindness, and self-control.

Devotional

“When the enemy surrounds you and lays siege to your soul, you have a source of living water to sustain you.”

I apply this phrase whenever I have a lot of worries;”Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.”

‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I really don't know where to go when I'm wandering around at the end of the world; “When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭43‬:‭2‬ ‭NLT‬‬
