God is Near, so No Fear

Today’s Reading: Hebrews 13:1-6

Hebrews 13:6 — So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

God promises His nearness. What can man do to me? Man can take all I own and leave me with nothing. Man can harm or kill my physical body. Man can speak lies and attack my mind and emotions. There are many things humans can do to rob, kill, and destroy other humans if they are being used by Satan.

But if the Lord is my helper, I do not have to fear what man can do to me. I can have confidence in the Lord’s help. The author of Hebrews quotes Psalm 118:6 in Hebrews 13:6. The Jewish readers of the letter to the Hebrews would be familiar with Psalm 118.

The psalmist declares that God, in His steadfast love, answered his prayers and set him free from his enemies.  The psalmist says it is better to take refuge in God than to trust any man, no matter how great and powerful that man may be.

Though he was surrounded by enemies on all sides, God was the psalmist's helper and all his enemies were cut off in the name of the Lord. The Lord was the psalmist’s strength and song. And so it was in this context, that the author of Hebrews said he had confidence in what the Lord can do and did not fear what men can do.

The author of Hebrews also quotes Deuteronomy 31:6, 8 saying, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” God is always near to His child. He never leaves His son or daughter, especially when enemies attack. God is our refuge. His steadfast love surrounds us, giving us strength and a song of triumphal praise. Draw near to God and you will see your enemies cut off.

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

When I was in Vienna, God was with me. When I was living in US, He was there too.

Now I live in Korea, He is here as well. I was waiting for the hungry, the needy heart. I will be abiding Him all the time here in Korea also. Because He will never leave me and forsake me.

Thank you, Jesus.
