Today’s Reading: John 14:15-21
John 14:16 — And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.
God promises to dwell with us and in us. Jesus tried to prepare His disciples for the time when He would no longer physically be with them. Jesus was going to ascend to heaven soon, so He made this beautiful statement to the disciples: “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.“
In the Bible, an orphan was one who was fatherless. This would mean that in addition to having no protection or provision, the child would have no one to guide and teach him. Jesus promised that He would send the Holy Spirit to be a Helper and a Teacher who would dwell with His disciples and, better yet, live within them.
Orphans are often lonely and lack love and a sense of belonging. Jesus promised that He would continue to love them and be with them. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit would adopt the followers of Christ into the family of God where they would find acceptance and belonging.
This world can be so alienating at times. Christians in schools, workplaces, the military, and even in some churches and families can feel alone because they have chosen to live for Christ and obey God’s Word. A Christian can wonder, “Where do I fit in here in this world?” It is a reality that this world is not our home, especially for Christians who do not compromise their faith to find acceptance in the world system.
You are not an orphan, my friend in Christ. You are accepted in the Beloved and a member in particular of Christ’s body. Like Jonathan’s orphaned son, Mephibosheth, you have been adopted by the King and you have a permanent seat at the King’s table of grace and truth You belong forever.
