Wisdom and Confidence

Proverbs 3:25-26 — Do not be afraid of sudden fear nor of the onslaught of the wicked when it comes; for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.

The wicked have a reason to be afraid of God’s wrath. The wicked live in opposition to God’s character and nature. The wicked defy God’s Lordship and seek to undermine God’s work. God will bring sudden terror and devastating trouble into the lives of the wicked. But those who honor and love God, those who have turned to God for salvation, have nothing to fear.

Solomon called having a right relationship with God “wisdom.” Wise people seek to know God and grow in the grace and the knowledge of Jesus, their Savior. Wise people have the Lord Jesus Christ as their confidence and assurance, so when the world of the wicked is falling apart all around them, they will be safe. The feet of the wise are on the right path, so they will not fall into the snare of the wicked.

The Bible speaks often of the snare of the wicked, which is foolish pride. The wicked says in his foolish heart, “There is no God and I can live however I want. I will do what is right in my own eyes, for I am the god of my life.”

Thank God for His way of enforcing humility in our lives. David thanked God when a righteous man struck him and humbled him with a rebuke; David called this a kindness, an act of loving devotion (Psalm 141:5). A wise, humble man or woman is confident in the grace of God that saves.

Perhaps in this new year we will witness sudden events that will cause panic and destruction. My friend and fellow believer, fear not. Have confidence in God whose plan is perfect. Trust God to keep your foot from being caught. Abide in the True Vine, Jesus Christ, and hold fast to the Certain Hope, Jesus Christ. “My eyes are toward You, O GOD, my Lord; in You I seek refuge” (Psalm 141:8).
