Value and Honor

1 Samuel 2:30 — Those who honor Me I will honor.

Honor is a value bestowed upon a person. The Bible teaches us that God is worthy of the highest honor simply for being God. He is the Creator and Sustainer of all that exists. We owe our existence to Him. Even if God did nothing for us but create us and give us life on this planet, He still should be given the greatest honor since He is the greatest Person of all.

Romans 1:21 points out the perversion of this world’s system of honor: “For although they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” People live foolish, futile lives because they refuse to acknowledge and honor God and give Him the value He deserves in their lives.

Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are an example of dishonoring God. These young men were priests who served in the tabernacle. They knew God’s commandments regarding the offerings, but they did not honor them. They wanted the best meats for themselves, and they also committed immoral acts with women serving at the tent of meeting.

When their father rebuked them, Hophni and Phinehas would not listen. They dishonored Eli as both their father and the high priest, they dishonored God’s commands, and they ultimately dishonored God Himself and treated Him as if He had no value.

God will not honor dishonor. God will not bless those who dishonor His Word, His Son, His Church, His people. God is a God of true honor and loyalty. Those who honor Jesus are blessed, but those who dishonor Jesus find themselves stumbling over Jesus and being disdained. Love and honor and value the One God loves and honors and values today.
