Malachi 4:2 — But for you who fear My name, the Sun of Righteousness shall rise with healing in His wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.
The Old Testament ends with God’s promise of a prophet who will preach to prepare the way of the Lord. This Lord will rise like the sun, blazing with divine righteousness and power to heal all who fear the name of the Lord.
Malachi’s prophecies were the last words delivered by a prophet until John the Baptist began preaching 400 years later. During those 400 years of silence, God’s people had to rely on the written word of God for spiritual hope and guidance. Day by day, their faith depended on reading, hearing, or remembering God’s Word, which would sustain them under the rule of the Persians, then the Greeks, and later the Romans.
The Jews suffered for their monotheistic faith in the one true God. Under the rule of these polytheistic empires, the Jewish people were oppressed because they feared only the name of the Lord and clung to the promise of the Messiah, their coming deliverer.
Malachi prophesied that when the Messiah, the Sun of Righteousness, rose, His coming would bring light and warmth like the Spring season. The Jewish people would be like calves that skip and leap and race around the green pastures in pure joy when they are released from confinement.
When Jesus comes into our lives, we can be like little children who are thrilled to play outside after being inside, sitting in the classroom for hours. We can experience freedom from the shackles of sin, and like the lame man healed at the Beautiful Gate, we can go walking and leaping and praising God. I hope that you find release in the promise of God’s Word today and that you are energized by the truth that sets you free!

[6] And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. [7] Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. [8] Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.
