The Shepherd Who Seeks

Ezekiel 34:11 — For this is what the Lord GOD says: “Behold, I Myself will search for My flock and seek them out.”

In Mark 6, Jesus tries to go away to a solitary place to rest with His disciples, but a multitude of people find Him. Instead of ignoring the people or telling them to go away, Jesus “had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd” (Mark 6:34). Jesus gathered these scattered, lost, and wandering sheep and began to teach them—to feed them spiritual food.

In Ezekiel 34, the Lord prophesied that He Himself would come and seek for His lost sheep, and He did when Jesus came. When Jesus comes again, He will once again gather God’s people and be like the good shepherd that David describes in Psalm 23. The Good Shepherd seeks to save the lost and to gather them into His sheepfold where they can find food, safety, and rest.

I need a shepherd. We all do. Our souls so easily get distracted and wander from the Lord when we think we see greener pastures. The devil wants us to walk by sight and look for greener pastures than the pasture where the Lord is feeding us and watching over us. Those so-called greener pastures are just a mirage in a barren wilderness where there is no life for our souls.

We can thank God that we have the Holy Spirit living inside us to shepherd us. He can use the Word of God that we have received to alert us when we are going the wrong way. Thank God for the church where the pastor preaches and teaches us the Word of God that can convict us when we have blindly taken the wrong course. God’s Word is our spiritual food and the light that reveals the Good Shepherd’s spiritual pathway for us to walk in.

Be a faithful sheep. Keep your eyes on the Shepherd, Jesus Christ, and listen for His voice. Jesus always has His eyes on you. Here is His promise for us from Ezekiel 34:15-16 — “I will tend My flock and make them lie down,” declares the Lord GOD. “I will seek the lost, bring back the strays, bind up the broken, and strengthen the weak.”
