Today’s Reading: Psalm 119:105-112
Psalm 119:105 — Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.
God promises to be our guiding light. Darkness—the total absence of any light—is frightening. I was once in a cave deep underground when every flashlight was turned off. The darkness felt heavy, thick, and oppressive. I hated it. Even a tiny spark of light would have been welcome, so when a match was lit to light a candle, my heart was lightened too.
1 John 1:5 says that God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all. None at all. John wrote that Jesus was the light of men, and that the life of Jesus brought light to everyone. Jesus Himself declared, “I am the light of the world.”
When Jesus arrived in this world, divine light shined into the darkness. Jesus came to show and tell us the truth that we need to know about God, so that we can be saved through having a relationship with Him. Jesus revealed that He was the guiding light spoken of in the Scriptures, and that by following Him, we can have eternal life.
There is so much darkness in this world, so much more darkness than we are aware of. We think that we see and know so much, but we do not. We need the light of God’s truth, so that we can walk by faith and not our own understanding.
God’s Word is a guiding light that shines to show us the right path to take. His Word encourages us to walk in the light, for that is where Jesus is. Jesus is the light and the life that we need for each day. “At one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8). Love the light today!

When I was living in Europe, there was “ not in a nuclear inferno, but in a blaze of candles in the churches of Eastern Europe.” Candlelight procession in East Germany did not show up well on the evening news, but they helped change the face of the globe.
