Special Deliverance

Today’s Reading: Judges 3:7-12

Judges 3:9 — But when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

God promises a deliverer. Adam sinned and condemned the human race to death. Death is existence apart from God, who is the source and sustainer of life. When man lives apart from God, he experiences spiritual death and eventually physical death. God sent Jesus to deliver the human race from sin and death by making a way for us all to have relationship with eternal life.

In the Old Testament, God’s people often turned their backs to God and lived doing what was right in their own eyes. Whenever the people chose to live apart from God, they placed themselves in bondage to the nations around them. Once the people woke up from their folly, they cried out to the Lord for help, and the Lord sent deliverers to save them from their enemies.

As Christians, we can fall into the same trap as the Israelites. We can turn our eyes away from Jesus and do what seems right in our own eyes. If we do this, we forfeit the stream of living water that flows from having a relationship with Christ. We return to the deadly emptiness and loneliness of life without the Life Giver. We feed on dust and ashes that can never satisfy our longing for God’s love.

But Jesus is our Savior and Deliverer, and He calls out to us, “Follow Me!” He draws us with His love to help us turn back to walk in the new and living way He has made for us. There are many times every day when we may cry out to the Lord to save us. Don’t be ashamed that you need a Savior. Call on Jesus, day and night, all the time. Love is waiting to deliver you.
