Sin: It's Not Worth It

Job 33:27-28 — He will declare to his friends, “I sinned and twisted the truth, but it was not worth it. God rescued me from the grave, and now my life is filled with light.”

What a testimony we read in these verses! “I sinned and twisted the truth, but it was not worth it.” Have you ever experienced this? I have. Sometimes sin is like one of those rides at a theme park that people stand for an hour waiting to ride. When you finally get on the ride, it is over in about a minute. You stood out in the hot sun for 60 minutes for a 1 minute thrill. Was it worth it? Some people think so, but many say, “One was enough for me. It wasn’t worth it.”

Sin promises some sort of benefit or gain, but leaves the sinner with some sort of loss. What did Judas think he would gain by betraying Jesus? Judas sinned and twisted the truth and ended up in such despair that he took his own life.

A woman commits adultery and destroys her marriage and family for a few moments of illicit pleasure. A man kills someone with his car and goes to prison because he wanted to get drunk or get high with is buddies. A teenager gossips about a friend and ruins their relationship in order to be accepted by a school clique. Sin is a thief that steals, kills, and destroys (John 10:10).

Fortunately, God is there for every person who has sinned. God is ready to rescue sinners from the grave sin has dug for them and fill their lives with holy, saving light. Jesus waits for sinners with open arms of grace to turn us from death and darkness to the light of eternal life. What did Jesus say to the woman taken in adultery? “Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.” What did Jesus say to the repentant thief on the cross? “Today, you will be with Me in paradise.”

Humble yourself and receive grace to turn from sin in your life. It is worth it to give your heart to Jesus.
