Secure on God's Shoulders

Today’s Reading: Luke 15:3-7

Deuteronomy 33:12 — The Lord’s beloved rests securely on Him. He shields him all day long, and he rests on His shoulders.

God promises to carry us on His shoulders. In the parable of the Lost Sheep, Jesus speaks of a shepherd who joyfully carries home a lost sheep on his shoulders. Jesus says that this is a picture of a lost sinner who repents and returns to God.

In Deuteronomy 33, Moses blesses each of the tribes of Israel. The tribe of Benjamin is called the Lord’s beloved and blessed with rest, security, and protection. The imagery that Moses uses is similar to that of the lost sheep and the shepherd that Jesus spoke about. The beloved of the Lord are resting and being carried on the shoulders of God, who is pictured as a shepherd.

Jesus is the Good Shepherd (John 10). When we were lost sinners, Jesus the Good Shepherd came and found us. We were not looking for Jesus, but He was looking for us. When Christ found us, we took the opportunity to repent and receive the grace of God for salvation, and Jesus then placed us on His shoulders.

Today, if you are a born-again child of God, you rest securely on God’s shoulders. You are not going to fall off because you rest securely on God’s shoulders, not our shoulders, and He shields us all day long.

Our Good Shepherd is joyfully carrying us to our new, eternal home. As we go through each day, we are safe and secure on Christ’s shoulders. This long walk of daily sanctification is not one we go through alone. In good times and bad times, the Lord is our shepherd, and He is with us always.
