Praying in Jesus' Name

Today’s Reading: John 14:12-14

1 John 5:14 — And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us.

God promises to answer prayer. Jesus said, “If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.” Was Jesus telling His disciples a formula for getting whatever they wanted? No. God is not a vending machine. God will not give us things we do not need or that are contrary to God’s character or God’s will. James 4:3 makes that clear.

Jesus was giving us guidance about prayer. Jesus told His disciples that when they aligned their desires with God’s desires and prayed in Jesus’ name, God would hear and act on those prayers. God will do what we ask because it glorifies Him and promotes His purposes.

Think about how Jesus prayed in Luke 22:42: “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me. Nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done." The Father did not remove the cup of suffering, and Jesus went to the cross and died an excruciating death in our place so that God’s will would be done and that Christ would be glorified.

So, when we pray, we should want our desires to match up with God’s desires. We often do not know what God’s plan or purpose may be in a situation, so we should also pray like Jesus did, that God’s will be done.

Three times, Paul asked the Lord to remove the thorn from his flesh, but the Lord did not do that. Instead, God told Paul, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9), and Paul realized that because of his weakness, the power of God rested upon his life.

God hears us when we pray in Jesus’ name, but God answers according to His will, not our will. Perhaps we ought to pray for God to draw us deeper into Christ’s heart and mind, so that we can pray according to the Father’s will. It is good to know that our Father loves us so much that He will only give us what is best. We can trust God.

Devotional

" It is good to know that our Father loves us so much that He will only give us what is best. We can trust God."

Whenever God never gives the answer to my prayer, I always think His perfect plan.

1 Corinthians 1:25 NLT

This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.

God's timing is always perfect than mine.
