Never Alone

Today’s Reading: Psalm 55:6-23

Psalm 55:17 — Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the Lord hears my voice.

God promises to always be there. David feared for his life. A friend had broken his promises of friendship and become an enemy. This former friend, probably Ahithophel, one of David’s closest advisors. had once walked with David to the temple to worship; now this man was using smooth words to bring division and destruction to David’s kingdom.

David wanted to fly away to escape the rebellion that Ahithophel was plotting with David’s son Absalom. It is believed that Ahithophel was the grandfather of David’s wife Bathsheba. Ahithophel’s bitterness over David’s adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah may have driven him to treason.

Ahithophel’s betrayal hurt David like being stabbed by daggers. David’s soul was in distress. He cried out to the Lord all the time because of the pain he felt. David had comfort in knowing that the Lord heard him. David was not alone in his distress.

Loneliness is a feeling of unwanted isolation or lack of connection, whether you are alone or surrounded by others. Loneliness is different from solitude, because solitude is being alone by choice for some reason (like spending time alone with God). Loneliness can cause physical, mental, and emotional health problems and even lead to premature death.

God does not want us to be lonely. In Genesis 2:18, God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” Even though Adam had God, God gave Adam a companion to be with him. We all need love and companionship, so the Holy Spirit lives in us and we have the body of Christ for companionship. 

God is always there for us in good times and bad times to acknowledge our pain and give us comfort. Do not be isolated in your problems. Connect with God through His Word, His Spirit, and His people today.
