Love That Won't Let Go

Today’s Reading: Isaiah 54:4-10

Isaiah 54:10 — “For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but My steadfast love shall not depart from you, and My covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

God promises unchanging love. God speaks words of compassionate love to His people, Israel, in Isaiah 54. The Lord likens Himself to a husband who cannot let His unfaithful wife go because His love is steadfast and unchanging.

The author of the hymn “O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go” was a Scottish pastor who lived in the 1800s. When George Matheson was twenty years old, his fiancée broke her engagement to him when he told her that he was going blind. George's sister took care of him for twenty years, until she got married. Her marriage reminded him of his former love who had let him go.

On the day of his sister’s wedding, George Matheson sat down and wrote the words to the hymn “O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go” in five minutes. He said that this hymn was the result of mental suffering he had experienced at being let go.

George Matheson realized that God’s love would never let him go. People’s love may change, but God’s love for him would not change.

First Corinthians 13:8 tells us that God’s love never ends. His love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Let God love you every day. Embrace your one true love, Jesus Christ, who will not let you go.
