Genesis 9:14-15 — When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember My covenant that is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
God brings the clouds over the earth. This means that the next time your picnic is ruined by a rain storm, you can hold God responsible. The clouds are under His control. If there is climate change, it is God-made and it happens to serve His purpose.
God sent the prophet Elijah to wicked King Ahab to say that there would be no dew or rain in Israel until Elijah prayed for rain. Israel was worshiping the false god Baal who was a god of rain and prosperity. No matter how much the prophets of Baal prayed and made sacrifices, it would not rain in Israel because God would not bring the clouds there. But when Elijah prayed, “the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain” (1 Kings 18:45).
Sometimes God brings clouds into our lives. We want sunny days with blue skies, but God brings dark clouds of rain and wind. A job is lost. Cancer is found. A baby is born but dies days later. There is an earthquake or a fire or a storm that destroys a home. A pastor is disgraced by sin and his church splits. There are so many dark clouds that can enter our lives, and they are there because God, in His infinite wisdom, has allowed them to be there for some reason known only to Him.
God promises us that when the clouds come, there will be a rainbow that appears to remind us of His promise to us that there will never be a flood so great that it will destroy everything. Job lost his home, his children, all of his wealth, and much of his health because God allowed Typhoon Satan to send dark clouds of rain and high winds into Job’s life. But Job looked for God’s rainbow. Job’s hope was in God. If you are in trouble today, look for God’s rainbow.

Family is the one human institution we have no choice over. Church calls for another step: to voluntarily choose to band together with strangers because of a…
