Today’s Reading: Romans 4:16-25
Romans 4:18 — In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.”
God promises a reason to believe. As Abraham and Sarah grew older and older, their prospect of having a child became less and less probable. Yet Abraham’s faith grew stronger.
How can it be that Abraham’s faith grew despite the unlikelihood of the promise being fulfilled? Walking by faith with God day by day had convinced Abraham that God was able to do anything He had promised. So, no matter what evidence was presented by natural sight, Abraham “believed against hope.” Abraham had hope when there was no reason to hope.
A person who knows God, who has experienced God’s faithfulness day after day, can have a hope that defies reason. Hope. Not discouragement. Not doubt. Not despair. This hope is grounded in the absolute certainty of God’s unchanging character and nature. The God of Hope is the reason to believe.
Never give up hope, because Hope will never give up on you.
