Zechariah 14:20 — On that day, HOLY TO THE LORD will be inscribed on the bells of the horses. And the pots in the house of the LORD shall be as the bowls before the altar.
Zechariah writes of a day when there will be no difference between the secular and the sacred. Everything will be sanctified. Common everyday items like a pot used for cooking will be as sacred as one of the bowls used before the altar in the temple. Everything will be holy to the Lord.
Why will everything be sanctified and holy? Can a bell or a pot really be holy in itself? Perhaps these items are holy because the people using them are sanctified and holy. Perhaps the pot in the hands of the sanctified housewife is holy to the Lord because that woman views cooking as a sacred honor. She is not only cooking for herself or friends or family; she is cooking for the Lord who gave her His life and blessed her with food, a pot, and people she loves to cook for.
The sanctified mechanic who uses a wrench to repair a car has a holy wrench in his hand when he considers what he does a sacred task; he is using his God-given talent to help someone. The ordinary wooden staff that Moses used for tending sheep was transformed into a holy instrument for deliverance because Moses used it for God’s glory.
The Levitical high priest wore a turban with a medallion of pure gold on it that said, “HOLY TO THE LORD.” The man who wore those priestly garments was used by God to do holy work that glorified God. If you are a believer, you are a member of God’s royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9) and you are holy to the Lord. You are the vessel in God’s hand that He uses to accomplish His sacred will.
Whether you drive a bus or a truck, teach students or train dogs, work in an office or a medical facility, take care of an elderly adult or a child who has special needs, serve people in a church or in a restaurant — whatever work you do, you are holy to the Lord, and you do sacred work when you do it for God’s glory with a grateful heart. “Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
