He Will Restore You

Deuteronomy 30:3 — He will restore you from captivity and have compassion on you.

God knew His people, the Israelites, better than they knew themselves. God knows you and me better than we know ourselves. This is very good for us because God is unbelievably good to us and He makes a way for us to recover when we fall short of His glory.

God knew that Israel would eventually stray and then turn their backs on Him. The Israelites would end up falling under the curse that God promised would overtake them if they cut themselves off from their relationship with Him. Deuteronomy 30 told the Israelites that when a future generation would return to God and obey His voice, He would restore them from captivity, have compassion on them, and prosper them.

Of course, the Israelites must have thought, “That curse will never fall upon us. We will always be faithful to the Lord. Why is God even bring up curses, captivity, and exile?” They were naive about human nature.

In the New Testament, Peter could not believe Jesus when He said, “Truly I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”  Peter replied, “Even if I have to die with You, I will never deny You.” Who knew better—Peter or Jesus? Peter denied the Lord three times. The disciples, who said they would never be scattered, were scattered that very night. Jesus knew these men, so Jesus had a plan for their restoration.

In John’s gospel we read about Jesus’ conversation with Peter where He asked Peter three times, “Do you love Me?” Peter’s denials were washed away by his three affirmations of love for Jesus. The Lord has a recovery plan for us.

Will we sin today? Probably. Will God be surprised? No. Does God have a plan for our recovery and restoration? Yes, indeed. Psalm 103:13-14 says, “As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He is mindful that we are dust.” I am thankful that God has compassion on a dusty people like us.

" I am thankful that God has compassion on a dusty people like us."

Psalms 49:7-9, 15 NLT

[7] Yet they cannot redeem themselves from death by paying a ransom to God. [8] Redemption does not come so easily, for no one can ever pay enough [9] to live forever and never see the grave.

[15] But as for me, God will redeem my life. He will snatch me from the power of the grave.
