Hosea 2:18 — And I will make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground. And I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land, and I will make you lie down in safety.
In Psalm 23:2 David wrote, “He makes me lie down in green pastures.” The Bible says that God makes His people lie down. Why must God “make” us lie down? To lie down is to rest. The Lord wants His people to lie down and rest. In work, study, and play, God wants His people to have rest.
Rest can be physical, and we all know how important that is. Rest can be psychological. We can have rest in our thoughts, rest in our emotions, rest in our souls. But we need spiritual rest to have complete rest.
When we have spiritual rest, our soul can rest, and our bodies can rest properly. The author of Hebrews wrote in Hebrews 4:9, “There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.” God rested from the work of Creation on the Sabbath. God was not tired. God rested because His creative work was finished. God’s rest enabled Him to enjoy what He had made, especially His relationship with Adam.
God wants us to enter into His rest, to enjoy our relationship with our Creator, Savior, and Sustainer. Perhaps God brings us to a place where the best choice is to lie down. We can lay down the burdens we are carrying as Jesus invited us to do in Matthew 11:28-30. Jesus said, “Come to Me.” Spiritual rest is guaranteed when we come to Jesus and lie down in the green pastures of His mercy, grace, and love. I hope you have sweet rest in Jesus today.
