Grace For Rest

Today’s Reading: Matthew 11:28-30

Matthew 11:30 — For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

God promises rest for weary souls. Do you know someone who is a perfectionist? Do you have unreasonable expectations of yourself? Do you fear being wrong or that people will figure out that you are not the person you want them to think you are? These are heavy burdens to bear.

Some Christians think they have to be perfect or God will not love and accept them. Some Christians try so hard to live up to some ideal standard they have imposed upon themselves that they can never reach. Some Christians are hiding behind a mask, pretending to be someone they are not.

For these Christians, the Christian life is exhausting and they are walking on a thin, high wire every day hoping not to lose their balance and fall. There is no grace in their lives, only works, so they have no rest for their souls.

Jesus says, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” God’s rest comes from the fact that Jesus has already perfectly finished the work of our salvation. Jesus has already met the necessary requirements to make us acceptable to God so that we can experience HIs love and intimate fellowship.

Jesus invites us to be yoked together with Him so He can teach us. Jesus wants us to learn how to love one another, forgive one another, give grace to one another, and set others free from the bondage of trying so hard to do something that He has already finished. Come to Jesus and take a deep breath of God’s grace. Find rest in letting God lead you in His will and making you just like Jesus.
