God's Unfailing Love

Today’s Reading: Jeremiah 31:1-6

Jeremiah 31:3 — Long ago the Lord said to Israel: “I have loved you, My people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to Myself.

God promises everlasting, unfailing love. Through the prophet Jeremiah, God promised that both the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah would be restored and reconciled into one nation. When Jeremiah wrote these promises, the northern kingdom had already fallen to the Assyrians and its people had been taken into exile and scattered. Israel’s sinfulness had brought this curse upon them.

But God still loved Israel. Even though Israel had committed spiritual adultery with idol worship and given her heart to wicked foreign gods, the Lord promised to rebuild “virgin Israel.” God’s everlasting, unfailing love would forgive and restore Israel, turning her from her whoredoms into a chaste virgin. This is incredible.

Not only would Israel become pure again, but God’s love would draw her to Him. Israel would fall in love with her husband Yahweh once again. And the result of this spiritual reunion would be happiness, dancing, fruitfulness, and worshiping the Lord with songs and tears.

Everlasting, unfailing love does not exist in this world apart from God. This kind of love was best displayed by Jesus Christ who voluntarily went to the cross and died for the sins of the world. The mob cried out for Jesus’ death. Then mocked and reviled Him as He hung in agony with nails driven through His hands and feet. Even then, Jesus loved those who had rejected Him and He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing.”

"For God so loved the world." How much does God love you? He loves you so much that He gave all. God gave Himself. God the Father sent God the Son to die in your place for your sins. You were guilty and condemned to spend eternity in hell, but Jesus became guilty in your place so that you could be made innocent and escape condemnation. How much are you worth to God? Everything. How much is God worth to you today?

Devotional

“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing.”

Unfailing love can also work with fair love which is not biased toward one side. Those who follow me well can love. I can love people who are similar to me. However, I must examine deeply before God whether the love I give is fair to everyone. Why is everyone leaving? Isn't my love perhaps unfair? Is it possible that I have no idea what I'm doing? How much is God worth to me?

Thank you Jesus!
