God Opens Blind Eyes

Isaiah 42:16 — I will lead the blind by a way they did not know.

How well do you see? Maybe you have perfect vision, but I must wear glasses to be able to navigate through life. Sometimes I feel blind without my glasses, since I cannot read without them. But I am not truly blind. God has great compassion for blind people, both those who are blind physically and spiritually. God wants everyone to have spiritual sight.

In Isaiah 46, God says that He will be a light to the nations to open the eyes of the blind. God says that He will bring prisoners out of the darkness of prison dungeons into the light. He will show spiritually blind people the folly of following idols and the glorious new thing He has done, which is to send the Light of the world to save them from the futility of sin.

God will lead the blind by a way they did not know, guide them in unfamiliar paths, and turn darkness into light before them. That is a beautiful promise to us! Even as believers, we can have spiritual blind spots in our lives. Jesus has a plan to shine His light into our lives to show us the blind spots where we have not completely surrendered to Him by faith.

The way that was previously unknown was the way of the Cross, which is the way to eternal life by grace through faith. It is at the cross of Christ that we see clearly the love of God in all its glory on display. It is at the cross where we behold Jesus like Saul did on the road to Damascus and, though Saul was blinded by Christ’s glory, he regained his sight and received a vision of grace and truth.

John Newton’s hymn Amazing Grace says “I was blind but now I see.” That is what grace does for us; it enables us to see the truth and to walk by faith and not by sight. Thank God for making the blind like us to see! Open our eyes, Lord! We want to see Jesus!
