Hebrews 13:6 — So we say with confidence: “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”
The Lord is on your side; He is your helper. The author of Hebrews quotes Psalm 118:6, which is one of a series of verses that proclaim that the Lord is better than any other helper. God is a better refuge than any man or any powerful, influential person. Why? When we call upon the Lord, He answers us and sets us free because He is our salvation.
You should read the testimony of the psalmist in Psalm 118. He was surrounded by nations that swarmed like bees, but in the name of the Lord, He cut them off. Three times he exclaims, “In the name of the Lord, I cut them off!” Three times He praises the right hand of the Lord that delivered him from death and defeat.
The author of Hebrews has this picture of the Lord as our mighty champion in mind when he quotes Psalm 118:6. He previously quoted Deuteronomy 31:6 saying, “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.” God, the undefeated champion of His people, vows never to leave or forsake us. With that assurance, we should not fear what men can do to us, although sometimes we do.
If the Lord is ready to help us when we call upon His name, we should be calling on His name instead of focusing on our fears. Saul would not go out and face Goliath because he focused on his fear of that giant. David was ready to fight Goliath because he knew the Lord was his helper. “The LORD, who delivered me from the claws of the lion and the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine” (1 Samuel 17:37).
Let’s say it again: The Lord is on your side; He is your helper. His mighty right hand is ready to save you, to cut off your enemy, if you will call upon the name of the Lord. The Lord will never leave you and never forsake you.

[2] Listen to my prayer, O God. Pay attention to my plea. [3] For strangers are attacking me; violent people are trying to kill me. They care nothing for God. Interlude [4] But God is my helper. The Lord keeps me alive! [5] May the evil plans of my enemies be turned against them. Do as you promised and put an end to them.
