Romans 1:17 — “The righteous will live by faith.”
Paul quotes Habakkuk 2:4 when he says, “the righteous will live by faith.” The word “live” means to have biological life and also to have a spiritual life. Our relationship with God through Jesus Christ lets us experience eternal life in our day-to-day physical life.
By having faith in the person and the finished work of Jesus, we receive His righteousness and the gift of eternal life. By faith in Jesus Christ, we are being made righteous through receiving eternal life through the Holy Spirit in us and by having faith in God’s Word.
The first part of Romans 1:17 says, “For in it [the Gospel] the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith.” The glorious gospel of Christ reveals to us how to have a life-giving relationship with God. Our relationship with God is by faith alone from the beginning to the end. We must live by faith.
Faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17). Hearing what? “The word of Christ,” which is the Good News of the Gospel. The gospel is not only important for my justification by faith—my being born again into the kingdom of God and being eternally saved—but also for my sanctification—my daily life as a child of the King, who is transforming me from the inside out.
I need to hear again and again the wonderful story of Jesus and how He died, was buried, and rose again for me. This story is a love story, and it tells me how much God loves and cares for me. This is the greatest story ever told, and when I hear it, faith blooms in my heart and life floods my soul. Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so. Righteous child of God, remember the story of Jesus and His great love for you today and receive faith to live in grace.
