Proverbs 10:24 — What the wicked man dreads will overtake him, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.
When the people began to build the Tower of Babel, they said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens, that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of all the earth.” These people were living in disobedience to God, who had commanded people to disperse and fill the whole earth. They feared being scattered. God scattered them.
Another biblical example of the wicked being overtaken by their fear is found in John 11:47-53. The chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the members of the Sanhedrin to discuss what should be done about Jesus. They feared that if Jesus continued His ministry, the Romans would come and “take away both our place and our nation.” They decided to kill Jesus, and they did. What happened? The city of Jerusalem was destroyed along with the nation of Judea.
When the wicked—those who oppose Christ and live in defiance to God’s commandments—attempt to stop God’s work, what they fear will overtake them. But the righteous—those who gladly follow Christ and desire to obey God’s commandments—will see their desires fulfilled because their desire is that God’s will be done in heaven and on earth and in them.
David wrote, “Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). What was David’s delight? "I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart” (Psalm 40:8).
Lord, may Your will be done delightfully in us and through us today. Amen.
