Romans 16:20 — The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
In Genesis 3:15, God promised Eve that her Seed would crush the serpent’s head, and this prophecy was fulfilled in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Here in Romans 16:20, Paul’s words echo that ancient promise when he says that the God of peace will soon crush Satan under the feet of the Roman believers.
Paul seems to be saying that since the Christ followers in Rome are in Christ, that they, as the body of Christ, will experience Christ’s victory over the enemy. As a church united in One Spirit, they would have a corporate victory. As individual members in particular of Christ’s body, they would have personal victory in their lives.
They key to spiritual victory, whether corporate or personal, is a relationship with the God of grace and peace, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the God of grace and peace toward us, but to Satan He is a fierce and mighty warrior who was revealed to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8).
With an old sin nature resident within us, we have no hope of victory over sin apart from the life of Christ inside us. We once were enemies of God, but now we have been brought near to Him by the blood of Jesus Christ. We are at peace with God by the grace of Jesus Christ. When we live in Christ, Satan is crushed under our feet and sin has no dominion over us (Romans 6:14). Praise the Lord!
