Content With Christ

Today’s Reading: Hebrews 13:5-6

Hebrews 13:5 — Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for He has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

God promises contentment. Paul wrote and told Timothy, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs” (1 Timothy 6:10). The author of Hebrews gives the same admonition to “keep your life free from love of money.”

Note that both biblical authors caution against the love of money and not money itself. People who do not keep their lives free from love of money become enslaved to loving money and are never content with however much money they have.

There are other things we could substitute for money. Some people love recognition and approval and become slaves to it. Some people love the pleasures of the flesh and crave them constantly. When people love anything more than God, they can be seduced into all sorts of evils and even be drawn away from their faith in God.

God wants us to be content with what we have, with what He has given to us. The trouble with us is that we do not understand what we have. We do not realize what God has given to us, and so we do not appreciate it. We believe the devil's lie that our relationship with Christ is not enough and we grow discontented.

Is a relationship with Jesus Christ truly important and valuable? Jesus often challenged people on this point. How much do we love Jesus? Not as much as He loves us. But the more we receive and believe in His love for us, the more we will grow in our love for Him and the more contented we will be.
