Cleansed!

Today’s Reading: 1 John 1:1-10

1 John 1:9 — If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

God promises to make us clean. Everything gets dirty. We spend our money on appliances and products to try to make things clean. We spend so much time bathing, doing laundry, brushing our teeth, washing dishes, vacuuming floors, and other cleaning chores. But what can wash away the stain of our sins?

The apostle John tells us that the blood of Jesus, God’s Son, cleanses us from all sin. Naturally thinking, how can blood clean anything? Blood usually leaves stains. But the blood of God’s Son is the most powerful cleaning agent in the universe. It is the only substance that can cleanse a human being from all wickedness.

John writes that when we sin (and we will), we must confess our sin as soon as possible, since God cannot fellowship with sin. When we sin, we are like the prodigal son Jesus spoke of in Luke 15. Sin puts us in the misery of the pig pen instead of enjoying the welcome of the Father’s house. But when we confess our sin, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us.

Oh, the blood of Jesus that washes us white as snow! We were covered in our own filth, just like Joshua the high priest in Zechariah 3:1-5. Our righteousness was like filthy menstrual rags (Isaiah 64:6). And yet God shed His blood for us when Jesus died on the cross for our sins. And that holy, sinless blood makes us spotlessly clean in God’s eyes when we put our faith in Christ.

When David wanted to be restored to fellowship with God, he prayed, “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow” (Psalm 51:7). Just as we brush our teeth, wash our hair, and clean our bodies on the outside, we should confess our sins to God to keep us clean on the inside.

"We should confess our sins to God to keep us clean on the inside."

Psalms 51:7 NLT

[7] Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

I am grateful for the grace of being washed in the blood of Jesus without any ritual to cleanse my sins.

Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean!

Amen!
