Today’s Reading: John 14:25-31
Psalm 29:11 — May the Lord give strength to His people! May the Lord bless His people with peace!
God promises to give us peace. On the night that Jesus was betrayed, He spoke to His disciples and gave to them the gift of His peace. Jesus wanted the disciples to have His peace so that they could endure what was about to happen to their master.
The ruler of this world’s anti-christian system was approaching to arrest Jesus and crucify Him. This would be a traumatic experience for Christ’s followers because they loved Him and expected Him to use His power to overthrow the dominion of Rome. But Jesus submitted to all that happened because it was His Father’s will.
Jesus had supernatural peace throughout all that He suffered because He loved the Father and the Father loved Him. It was this love relationship that gave Jesus the courage to entrust God with His life and to have peace that passes human understanding.
Political leaders want to build their reputations as peacemakers and attempt to make warring nations negotiate peace treaties. But many peace treaties are broken because there is no lasting peace until people’s hearts are surrendered to the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ. Political peace is external and temporary. Christ’s peace is internal and eternal.
As believers, we are engaged in daily spiritual warfare, but we can have eternal peace in our hearts because we have a love relationship with Jesus. “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3). Abide in Christ’s love and rest in spiritual peace.
