Believers Under Construction

Today’s Reading: Romans 8:18-30

2 Corinthians 4:17 — For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.

God promises to work divine good in our lives. Have you ever seen an architect’s drawing or scale model of a building that is to be constructed? It shows what the building will look like and sometimes includes details like trees and other landscaping ideas along with people so that you can get a sense of how large the building will be.

In a sense, this is who we are when we come to Christ and receive His grace for salvation. We are justified—declared righteous in God’s eyes—and declared to be just like Christ. We are like the architect’s plan for the building that is to be built. When we come to Christ, we surrender the land of our lives for Him to build upon, and He lays the foundation for the glorious structure that will be. Jesus Himself is the Cornerstone.

But then the day by day work of salvation begins in us. God the architect who has predestined us to be conformed to the image of His son, puts the Holy Spirit in the building site (us) and starts the construction work in our hearts and souls. We are being sanctified—made righteous in our experience. The Spirit uses God’s word and light momentary afflictions to work divine good in our lives and build us up into Christlikeness.

God the architect oversees the Holy Spirit who is the project manager to be sure that we become the completed building that is seen in the architect’s plan. Our lives are a spiritual construction site, and there is much work to do. But in the end, there will be something like a spiritual building dedication ceremony. The work of salvation will be complete when we are glorified. Our transformed souls will be reunited with or physical bodies that have become like Christ’s own spiritual body, and the architect’s plan will be finished.

Salvation includes three parts: justification, sanctification, and glorification. Believers are in the sanctification process today as Christ is being worked into our lives by the Holy Spirit according to God’s plan. God is working a good work today, and He lives at the job site to oversee every detail of our transformation into likeness of Christ. To God be the glory! Great things He has done, is doing, and will do!

Devotional

“Our lives are a spiritual construction site, and there is much work to do.”

Even though we are in the process of becoming sanctified, I often make mistakes and am disappointed. I cannot wait or tolerate others, let alone myself. I must not forget that God is still working. He is our architect and designer of my life!

Thank you Jesus!
