Psalm 119:165 — Abundant peace belongs to those who love Your law; nothing can make them stumble.
When we are loving and obeying God’s Word, nothing can make us stumble into sin, and we have peace. But when a believer falls into sin, he does not experience God’s peace. Sin leaves the believer with a troubled soul until he confesses it and receives Christ’s forgiveness.
Unconfessed sin can cause anxiety in the believer’s soul. Why? Because sin has no place in the believer’s relationship with God. David confessed to the Lord, “Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight” (Psalm 51:4). David confessed his sin because he did not want anything to come between him and God. His sin was “always before” him, causing anxiety; David wanted only the Lord to be before him.
When we love God’s law, God’s Word, we love God. Barnes’ Notes on the Bible says, “The love of God is the best— the only— way to secure permanent peace in the soul.” The love of God keeps us safe from sin. When God loves me, and I receive it and let it hold me in its embrace, I am so satisfied that no temptation can entice me to sin.
There is abundant peace in the love of God which motivates me to love and obey His Word. And the Word of God tells me how much God loves me! This is why Jude 1:21 says, “Keep yourselves in the love of God.” Stay in the love of God and let the love of God guard your heart against anything that would come between you and Jesus.
