2 Kings 22:19 — “Because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its people, that they would become a desolation and a curse, and because you have torn your clothes and wept before Me, I have heard you,” declares the LORD.
Hilkiah the high priest found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord and had it read to King Josiah. When Josiah realized that he and his people had not been faithful to God’s Word, he tore his clothes and wept. Josiah’s heart was broken and contrite before God.
Huldah the prophetess told Josiah that God heard Josiah’s prayer because Josiah responded in humility when he heard the Word of God.
When we hear or read God’s Word, how do we receive it? Do we believe that the Bible is God’s Word and that it is the truth that can save and transform us? Do we acknowledge that the Bible is not the words of men who died centuries ago, but the words of the living, active Spirit of God? Do we realize that the Bible speaks to us today and that its words are life to us, spirit, soul, and body?
When we approach the Word of God with humility, with expectation that the one true God who loves us will speak something to us that we need to hear, we have the right attitude. The Holy Spirit longs to reveal to us the truth of God’s Word that will set us free and strengthen us to persevere in faith.
Lord, give us tender, humble hearts so that we can hear your voice and receive faith to live by grace. Lord, we want to be the sheep who hear your voice and follow You.

Yes, when I hear or read God’s Word, I want to understand and receive it.
I believe that the Bible is God’s Word and that it is the truth that can be saved and transformed me.
The Bible speaks to me today and that its words are life to me, spirit, soul, and body.
I expect to hear the Word of God with humility that the one true God who loves me will speak something to me. The Holy Spirit longs to reveal to me the truth of God’s Word that will set me free and strengthen me to persevere in faith. Thank you,Jesus!
