English Grammar Syllabus
Based on the Gospel of John
Target Audience: Korean middle-aged beginners
Objective: Learn fundamental English grammar through key verses from the Gospel of John
Duration: 8 Classes (1.5–2 hours per class)
Class 1: The 8 Parts of Speech
Grammar Focus: Nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections
Key Bible Verse: John 1:1 – "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
Activities:
Identify parts of speech in John 1:1
Classify words into categories (nouns, verbs, etc.)
Simple exercises to recognize parts of speech
Class 2: The 6 Types of Phrases
Grammar Focus: Noun phrase, verb phrase, adjective phrase, adverb phrase, prepositional phrase, and infinitive phrase
Key Bible Verse: John 3:16 – "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son."
Activities:
Identify different phrases in John 3:16
Create sentences using different types of phrases
Matching phrases to their functions
Class 3: Clauses
Grammar Focus: Difference between independent and dependent clauses
Key Bible Verse: John 8:12 – "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
Activities:
Identify independent and dependent clauses in the verse
Combine clauses to form meaningful sentences
Practice writing simple and complex clauses
Class 4: Types of Sentences
Grammar Focus: Declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences
Key Bible Verse: John 14:6 – "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
Activities:
Identify sentence types in Bible verses
Practice writing each type of sentence
Group activity: Rearranging words to form different sentence types
Class 5: Sentence Structure

- S + V + C
Grammar Focus: Subject + Verb (S + V),
Subject + Verb + Complement (S + V + C)
Key Bible Verse: John 10:11 – "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."
Activities:
Identify S + V and S + V + C structures in verses
Sentence-building exercises using different subjects and verbs
Writing simple declarative sentences
Class 6: Sentence Structure
- S + V + O
Grammar Focus: Subject + Verb + Object (S + V + O)
Key Bible Verse: John 11:25 – "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die."
Activities:
Identify S + V + O structure in John 11:25
Convert simple sentences into S + V + O format
Speaking practice: Describing actions using S + V + O
Class 7: Sentence Structure
– S + V + IO + DO
Grammar Focus: Subject + Verb + Indirect Object + Direct Object (S + V + IO + DO)
Key Bible Verse: John 2:7-8 – "Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ So they filled them to the brim."
Activities:
Identify IO and DO in the verse
Practice: making sentences with IO and DO
Role-playing: using S + V + IO + DO in dialogues
Class 8: Sentence Structure
– S + V + O + OC & Review
Grammar Focus: Subject + Verb + Object + Object Complement (S + V + O + OC)
Key Bible Verse: John 15:5 – "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit."
Activities:
Identifying O + OC structures in verses
Writing sentences: using S + V + O + OC
Final review: Quiz + speaking exercises
